BRICS Renewable Energy Symposium

The role of municipalities in the battle against climate change is crucial for the BRICS to meet its 2030 Goals. Considering the acceleration of urbanisation, the high numbers of people now living in cities and their importance from an asset value and economic growth perspective, cities are well-positioned to respond to the challenge of climate change. But municipalities have limited powers. Recognising this challenge, this Symposium will focus on how BRICS municipalities can accelerate the implementation of Renewable Energy projects, highlight the barriers to such development and expand on potential opportunities for partnerships.

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), in partnership with Nelson Mandela University, the University of Venda and the South African BRICS Think Tank, are hosting this Symposium to advance Renewable Energy Adoption among BRICS Cities, with a goal to create economic development opportunities. The event brings together practitioners and academics from across BRICS countries to discuss the modalities of Renewable Energy Implementation at the municipal level.

The Symposium is also open to members of the public, including researchers, practitioners, civil society and local government representatives engaged in the renewable energy sector. Our discussions will help identify opportunities to expand renewable energy projects and overcome the barriers impeding the growth of renewable energy at a city level.
