The COVID-19 Wake-Up Call: Underscoring Longstanding Inequalities in the South African Health System BMGF

Abstract

Taking Stock Almost three years into COVID, through a series of engagements with academics, civil society, policymakers, the health sector, and communities, we will pause and consider the implications of the available evidence. The focus of these engagements will be to find innovative solutions to close the evidence to policy gap and to identify key action points to address the inequalities that prevail in the South African health system. 1. A National Data and Policy Think Tank: The Impact of COVID 2. Interactive Design Thinking Workshops at Provincial Level The Need for Action This 6-month project starts with the evidence, with the data. But it is does not end there. The data is used as a starting point for policy and programmatic action. Data is used as a tool to urge academics, policymakers, provincial implementers, civil society, and communities to consider and identify steps along the evidence to policy pathway, or practical small interventions that could be taken to shift the inequalities that continue to exist in our health system.
