Abstract

The housing satisfaction survey employed a range of indicators relating to subsidised housing in GP. The selected indicators sought to assess: demographic profiles and household characteristics; education and economic activities, such as employment, income and credit. In particular, the survey assessed levels of satisfaction with subsidised housing, and general services provided at the project level. The study also sought to understand the level of satisfaction with subsidised housing, the facilities provided with each unit and satisfaction with the neighbourhood. Also examined were social networks and their contribution to the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of residents in subsidised housing projects in Gauteng. The survey went beyond understanding satisfaction with the dwellings and neighbourhood to exploring the satisfaction of residents with services provided by the GDHS, as well as the extent to which the Bathopele service standards were complied with. The comprehensiveness of the indicators in addressing the key elements of human settlements in Gauteng in particular, and South Africa more broadly, suggests that these could be employed in follow up surveys to for assess the level of satisfaction with subsidised housing in general.
