Abstract

MTN requested the HSRC to conduct a survey among South African adults about their access to, use of and preferences with regard to cellular phones and other telecommunications services. The survey focused on four issues: 1. The reasons people use cellular phones 2. Criteria on the basis of which people choose and/or switch cellular phone providers 3. Public knowledge and understanding of social investments made by cellular providers 4. Expenditure on their cellular and/or Telkom services The results that are reported here are the responses of a realized sample of 2563 people across the country, to a range of questions that were put to them as part of the HSRC's regular public opinion surveys. The results reflect the views of people who have cellular phones as well as those who do not.
