Dr Andreas Scheba is a Senior Research Specialist in the Inclusive Economic Development (IED) division of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in South Africa.

His research focuses on urbanisation and inclusive cities in South Africa and the global South. He is particularly interested in urban governance and policy with regard to affordable housing, informality and spatial economies. His research is informed by theories of political economy, development studies and geography and aims to contribute to knowledge, public debate and policies on how to mitigate poverty and inequality. His strengths are qualitative research methods, but he has great interest and experience in mixed-methods and spatial research.

Dr Scheba joined the HSRC in August 2015 and over the last few years, he has worked on local, national and international projects for the National Treasury, Parliament of South Africa, ESRC/NRF Urban Transformations, UKRI and GCRF, international donors, the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town, French Development Agency and others.

He is a Research Fellow at the UKRI funded Centre for Sustainable, Healthy, Learning Cities and Neighbourhoods (SHLC) based at the University of Glasgow, U.K. He is also a core member of the SARCHi Chair collaboration between HSRC and University of the Free State on City-Region Economies.

Andreas has a Master of Socio-economics from the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria, and a PhD in Development Policy and Management from the University of Manchester, U.K.

Before joining HSRC, Andreas worked as a teaching assistant in the Institute of Data processing in Social Sciences, Economics and Business at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. During and between his studies he spent long periods working or researching in Kenya (Nairobi), Tanzania (Lindi Region) and South Africa (Cape Town). After receiving his PhD in December 2014, he volunteered and freelanced as a research consultant for private companies.
