Dr Petronella Saal is a research specialist in the HSRC's Inclusive Economic Development research division. She completed a doctorate in computer-integrated education with honorary colours at the University of Pretoria (2020). She also holds an honours degree in education management, law and policy from the University of Pretoria (2015). Saal specialises in computer-integrated education in primary and secondary schools. Her research interests are comparative (within and across countries) education, cross-sectional studies, educational technology and mathematics education.

Before, Saal was an educator, who taught Computer Applications Technology, Economic Management Sciences, Economics and Business Studies at multi-racial secondary schools in South Africa. Before joining the HSRC in 2021, she supervised honours students in Assessment and Quality Assurance in Education and

Training at the University of Pretoria. She is also a German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD (German: Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) alumni.

Saal is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pretoria. So far, she has published four scientific papers in international peer-reviewed academic journals and has presented her work at national and international research platforms.
