Dr Yasser Buchana
Dr Yasser Buchana is a senior research specialist in the HSRC's Centre for Science, Technology, Innovation Indicators (CeSTII). He holds a PhD in information systems from the University of Cape Town, a master's degree in information systems (cum-laude) and a BSc (Computer Science) from the University of the Western Cape. Buchana specialises in information systems and innovation systems, particularly science, technology and innovation (STI) indicators, including the measurement of innovation and agricultural business innovation in South Africa.
Buchana has more than a decade's experience in the public and private sector having worked as a software developer, analyst, lecturer and researcher. From 2019 to 2021, he led and supervised the first-ever measurement of innovation in the agricultural sector in South Africa for the Department of Science and Innovation. Buchana is also the current chairperson of the data committee within CeSTII, a role he has performed for the last 4 years.
Before joining the HSRC, Buchana spent several years as an academic and researcher during which time he taught courses in research methods (part-time) to postgraduate students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. During the past 10 years, he has mostly conducted his research in the area of information systems and innovation systems with a specific focus on innovation measurement.
He has published several peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented at numerous conferences locally (in South Africa) and internationally. Current interests include STI measurement, data science and project management.
Buchana has published several scientific articles in local and international peer-reviewed academic journals. He has also published 3 research reports and 3 HSRC policy briefs and presented several papers and posters at local and international conferences.
