and explaining social conditions and informing social change for inclusive growth in communities. Contributing to the alleviation of poverty and a reduction in the inequality gap, and the expansion of decent work opportunities for the majority of South Africa’s people, will remain central to the HSRC’s programme of work. To be able to report on the successes and achievements of the organisation requires the collective effort and input of a number of key role players. I would therefore like to express my gratitude to the Minister of Science and Technology (now the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology) and the Director-General and staff of the department for their ongoing guidance and support. Thanks also go to the Portfolio Committee on Science and Technology (now the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology), and the Standing Committee on Appropriations, whom we have the honour of briefing a couple of times during the year.
