Structure of the
HSRC Board
Members are selected and appointed by the Ninister of Science and Technology from a shortlist of candidates approved
by the National Assembly. Section 5 of the HSRC Act outlines the composition of the Board as follows:
•
A chairperson designated by the minister;
•
A minimum of six and a maximum of nine other members; and
•
The CEO.
Members are appointed in their personal capacities and are distinguished in the field of human sciences, or possess
special qualifications in relation to the functions of the Council. At least one member of the Board has financial expertise
and one member is a distinguished representative of the social science research community of the rest of Africa. With
the exception of the latter, all members of the Board are citizens of or have permanent residence in South Africa.
The following members served on the Board between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2017:
