Opportunities to participate

Opportunity for collaboration in the HSRC's client survey

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) has been conducting the South African Social Attitudes Survey on an annual basis since 2003, with the 7th round completed late in 2009.  SASAS is a nationally representative sample survey of approximately 3,500 adults aged 16 and older that investigates public’s attitudes, beliefs, behaviour patterns and values in the country. Due to various requests from government departments and other organisations, the HSRC has decided to make similar capacity available to external organisations in the form of a client survey. The Client Survey will run parallel with the HSRC’s SASAS survey and will follow the same methodological principles.

We would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in the Client Survey by including a module of questions, either on a once-off basis or repeated at periodic intervals, to provide trends in the public’s views on issues that relate to your department’s or organisation’s core mandate. We are currently preparing for the 2010 Survey round, with the fieldwork scheduled to take place in September.

Since the client purchases a set of questions (recommended minimum is  20) in an already existing survey, the cost is substantially reduced due to benefits relating to economies of scale. For a module of 20 questions, as well as a tabulation report, the costs will amount to R280 000 (VAT exclusive) in the 2010 round.  This amount will be adjusted for inflation in subsequent rounds. As part of these costs, the HSRC will offer the following:

  • Assistance with the design of the module;
  • High quality sampling techniques;
  •  Face-to-face interviews with a nationally representative sample of South Africans;
  • Quality control and data analysis;
  • A dataset in SPSS, SAS and STATA formats (convertible to MS Excel) containing the module’s data together with background variables;
  • Strict standards of Ethics in research.

Should you have any further queries or points of clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the SASAS team.
