National Women's Day is celebrated annually on 9 August. The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country's pass laws that required South Africans defined as "black" under The Population Registration Act to carry an internal passport, known as a pass, that served to maintain population segregation, control urbanisation, and manage migrant labour during the apartheid era.  The first National Women's Day was celebrated on 9 August 1994.

On 8 August in commemoration of National Women’s Day the HSRC together with key partners will explore ,"Are we really committed to gender equality and women's rights?"

South Africa is praised for having some of the most progressive laws and policies on gender equality and women's rights in the world. However, women remain 'the face of poverty' and are exposed to high levels of violence, labour force exploitation and patriarchy. Access to education and health care remains a challenge that affects well-being. So, are policy makers taking women's rights seriously? And if they are, are the right evidence-based policy choices being considered?
