HSRC to release the results of the study on the Voices of critical skilled migrants in SA

Pretoria, Monday 18 June 2018 – The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) will release the results of the study on the Voices of critical skilled migrants in South Africa on Friday 22 June 2018.
The study which was conducted in Gauteng province investigated ways in which South Africa could attract, retain and integrate skilled immigrants into different sectors of the economy. It also sought to explore factors that made South Africa a country of choice for critical skilled migrants.
The study also explored the experience of critical skilled migrants in South Africa which could serve to improve systems and processes.
Moreover, it also sought to understand the obstacles that prevent the successful integration of skilled migrants into the South African labour market. Ultimately, this study aims to highlight key challenges and critical aspects to consider in developing and implementing the country’s immigration policies.
The study will therefore suggest policy recommendations which could enhance South Africa’s ability to attract and retain skilled migrants who could support the country’s growth and development objectives.
In its methodology, the study aimed to respond to the following questions:
- who are South Africa’s competitors in attracting critical skilled migrants and why?
- what are South Africa’s competitors doing better that could be emulated?
- what is South Africa’s current policy on attracting critical skilled migrants and do how critical skilled migrants view South Africa?
Department of Home Affairs’ Chief Director in Policy & Strategic Management, Dr John Carneson will deliver an address in response to the findings of the study.
The study was conducted by a team of HSRC researchers that include Dr Emmanuel Owusu-Sekyere, Mr Nedson Pophiwa, Ms Marie Wentzel, Mr Johan Viljoen and Professor Barwa Kanyane.
