Webinar to focus on the BRICS Development Bank finance for the Global South in the post COVID-19 era

Pretoria, Tuesday 6 July 2021 – The Human Sciences Research Council’s (HSRC) BRICS Research Centre and partners, will hold a webinar to look at the role of the BRICS Bank and how it finances development in a post COVID-19 world. Held under the banner, the BRICS bank finance-development in the post COVID-19 era for the global south, the virtual event will be held on Wednesday 7 July 2021 at 12h00 Harare/Pretoria Time / 18:00 Beijing Time.
The webinar will explore how the BRICS Development Bank could help to resolve the economic challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and other developmental challenges in the Global South, and continue to fulfil its developmental mandate in this region.
The BRICS Development Bank represents an international mechanism of innovation in the field of international development financing and enhances BRICS as an emerging political and economic power.
However, the BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement is currently insufficient to cope with any economic crises. BRICS as an emerging global superpower derives its strength from the BRICS Development Bank, which provides the bulk of financial support to the BRICS member states. The bank provides loans for infrastructure projects as well as investment and economic stimulus package to the BRICS member states and their regional partners.
Despite its critical role in the region, the BRICS Development bank is under strain from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
There is therefore a need to strengthen its resilience, so that it can continue to drive economic growth in the Global South and beyond.
The webinar is organised in partnership with the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies (ACCWS), South African BRICS Think Tank and National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS).
