Pretoria, Monday 09 November 2020 –  Members of the media are invited to join the webinar on the impact of corruption on the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, based on a case of SME governance practices for economic growth in South Korea. The webinar will be held on Tuesday, 10 November 2020 at 10h00 Harare/Pretoria time (17h00 Seoul Korea time).

The webinar aims to assess the capacity of national governments and local economies to facilitate effective, smart and globally competitive African SMEs in the post-COVID-19 era. The event will be co-hosted by the African Union Development Agency of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (AUDA-NEPAD), the BRICS Research Centre of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.

The event is part of the AUDA-NEPAD’s SME acceleration research project, which aims to examine the local and national governance mindsets regarding work ethics, accountability, corruption, entitlement and local economic development oversight.

South Korea is relevant to this critical study as it maintains a strong record of SME growth, and has remained a constructive development partner to the African continent.

According to the AUDA-NEPAD, formal SMEs contribute up to 40% of gross domestic product (GDP) in developing markets and they have played a significant role in aiding the growth of the Korean economy since the 1960s. In 2018, South Korea’s national growth was among the top 21 in the world.

“However, corruption has an estimated direct annual global cost of $3.6 trillion paid in bribes every year. The rapid and emergency purchases to address the global pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in procurement systems that were already prone to fraud and corruption,” said the AUDA-NEPAD.

The webinar will assist in paving the way to examine comparative best practices of South Korea for SME implementation in Africa.
