HSRC facilitates high-level Food and Nutrition Security Validation Workshop

On 3 and 4 October 2019, Dr Peter Jacobs, Dr Admire Nyamwanza, Ms Bhekiwe Fakudze and Ms Khanyisa Mkhabele from EPD and Dr Whadi-Ah Parker from SAPH attended and presented at a National Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) Workshop in Johannesburg. The workshop was organised by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).
The HSRC was among the facilitators of the workshop. The workshop had two main objectives. Firstly, it was for FNS stakeholders in the country to collectively engage and receive updates on the progress of the implementation of the National Food and Nutrition Security Implementation Plan (NFNSP 2018-2023) as a build up to the 2019 World Food Day Commemorations. Secondly it was intended to receive updates on and validation of work on two FNS work streams commissioned by DALRRD and FAO – the first one being undertaken by the HSRC on the development of a Food and Nutrition Security Information System for South Africa, and the second one being executed by Research and Training for Health and Development (RTHD) (with the support of UNICEF) on developing a Food and Nutrition Security Communication Strategy for South Africa.
Dr Admire Nyamwanza, Dr Peter Jacobs and Dr Whadi-ah Parker presented on the work that the HSRC is doing. The draft reports presented by the HSRC were extensively discussed and validated in 3 commissions, with participants giving comments and expressing satisfaction with the work done. The workshop was well-attended, with representatives from the government, civil society, farmer organisations, the private sector as well as academic and research institutions.
