The recent virtual launch of a digital platform to strengthen the innovation capabilities of municipalities was a resounding success. High quality presentations sparked lively conversations in the plenary Q&A as well as in the Zoom-chat box. Presenters showcased the history of the Municipal Innovation Maturity Index (MIMI), the benefits of MIMI for municipalities and illustrations of its major achievements since the start of its digitisation phase in 2019. Our Acting CEO, Professor Leickness Simbayi, emphasised how the leadership of the IED team in the design and pilot of MIMI fits into the strategic mandate and plan of the HSRC. Speakers representing the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and our research consortium partners at the University of KwaZulu-Natal also commended the HSRC for its leadership in developing this new information and decision tool for enhancing learning capabilities in municipalities.
