SA’s plans to combat child hunger were flawed prior to the Covid-19 crisis. And now, the absence of a strategic plan and funds for food relief could push already vulnerable children to the brink of starvation.

April 2020 surveys by the University of Johannesburg and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) indicated that up to 55% of informal settlement and township residents had no money to buy food during lockdown.
