Tobacco is banned to protect lives - Dlamini-Zuma

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma says the decision to temporarily ban the sale of tobacco products during level 4 of the nationwide lockdown was to protect people’s lives and health, and to reduce the likelihood of added strain on the healthcare system.

Dlamini-Zuma mentioned three studies and a review summary that show how smokers suffered more severely from Covid-19. She referred to a study by the Human Research Council, which concluded that 88% of smokers were unable to access cigarettes during level 5 of the lockdown.
