The changing role of the university in inclusive innovation in South Africa: comparing the role of public research institutes

Abstract

The research project will contribute one complementary component to a broad multifaceted research agenda focused on problematising the role of the university in South Africa, and comparatively, in the SADC region. A suite of interlocking projects has been designed to map the nature of university interaction with external social partners ? firms, government and civil society - and to study the dynamics of innovation networks, in various contextual settings. The complementary focus of the present research project is on public research institutes, to map the nature of their interaction with the range of external social partners. A complex logistical, policy and conceptual explanation is required, to demonstrate the rationale and policy relevance of the project.
