Abstract

Leveraging absorptive capacity for innovation and development: An assessment of the natural scientific professional organisations This research hopes to build on a preliminary exercise of reviewing the state of SACNASP accredited councils. Of important for this report will be to present a concise account of the absorptive capacity of the organisations. Building on the absorptive capacity as a concept, the review will seek to provide a descriptive account of: - The purpose and mandate of the organisation - through its vision, mission and broad objectives and goals. Alignment to broad national goals (NDP and DST vision) - The human capital base of the organization. Emphasis will be on levels of qualifications (above first degree) analysed by population group, fields of study, gender, place of training, etc). - Types and levels of collaboration with other research organisations, universities, government departments and other councils. - Challenges and opportunities in supporting the national system of innovation mandate of DST. Analysis of these indicators, among others, could provide an initial coherent picture of the nature of the current and potential contribution of these organisations in leveraging role they play within the broader knowledge and innovation discourse. Challenges will be identified as well as possible areas for collaboration and support.
