Abstract

This is a one year pilot study. Home-based counselling and testing (HBCT) will be evaluated in KZN as an intervention to massively increase knowledge of HIV serostatus and link eligible HIV+ persons to HIV care services, including antiretroviral (ART) following South African guidelines. Our core hypothesis is that HBCT in KZN will reach HIV+ persons who are asymptomatic - thus not likely to seek HIV testing but who are critical to ongoing transmission - and through effective linkage to HIV care and prevention services, including ART, their infectiousness will be reduced. The focus of this pilot will be to assess the effectiveness of linkages to services for HIV+ persons identified by HBCT and point-of-care CD4 testing, who will be actively referred to HIV care services and antiretroviral treatment.
