Abstract

This proposal is submitted in response to the call for proposals made by the International Labour Organization (ILO) for conducting research on ?What works in HIV and AIDS and the World of Work?. The ILO has over the years implemented innovative HIV workplace initiatives in collaboration with partners, in high burden countries guided by the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the ILO Recommendation concerning HIV and AIDS. The phrase `workplace initiatives? covers HIV workplace programmes and policies in the public and private sectors, as well as in the formal and informal economies. The ILO HIV workplace initiatives are very crucial given the fact that the effects of HIV/AIDS are concentrated among the most productive age groups and it imposes huge costs on enterprises through falling productivity, increased labour costs and the loss of skills and experience. These initiatives facilitate access to prevention, treatment, care and support services for workers and their families and dependants, thereby also reaching out to the larger community. There is a need to investigate what works, how and why, good outcomes were achieved, including those related to gender issues as well as find out which environmental factors contributed to the good outcomes achieved.
