Abstract

The FXB Centre?s Program on the Health Rights of Woman and Children (HRWC) aims to launch a study to specify the extent of the cumulative burden of maternal mortality on the family and the community, in order to raise awareness of the real costs of failure to meet international development targets around maternal health and to propose concrete steps that governments and other actors can take to reduce the grave family and larger societal consequences that result from this failure. Approximately every 90 seconds, a girl or women dies in pregnancy and childbirth around the world. For every woman who dies, approximately 20 others are left with life-long debilitating complications. But even these alarming numbers do not begin to capture the full extent of suffering caused by maternal mortality. The great majority of woman who die of maternal causes, leave behind children who have already been born.
