Abstract

The emergence of the generalized heterosexual HIV epidemic in South Africa in the early 1990s eclipsed the earlier HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM). Information on HIV prevalence, risk behaviors and HIV prevention strategies among MSM in South Africa is extremely limited. The NSP draws attention to the lack of information on HIV among most-at-risk populations (MARPS) including MSM, and assigns responsibility for behavioral surveillance to the HSRC and the DOH. The prevalence of HIV among MSM in South Africa is currently unknown. The South African government has not submitted information on the UNGASS indicators for MSM in its previous country reports due to a lack of information. Three recent studies of HIV among MSM, conducted in three different cities (Johannesburg/Soweto, Durban and Cape Town) by three different groups of researchers, were released in April 2009.
