Health of our Educators and Officials in Public Schools In South Africa: A National Survey
Abstract
The proposed study will determine the changes that have occurred in the HIV epidemic since the last survey. It will also determine the impact of interventions which are directed towards educators, school support staff and officials of the provincial and national offices of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), including the PCTA programme and other initiatives in schools by educators. The primary objectives of this proposed study are to: estimate the prevalence and incidence of HIV amongst public educators, school support staff and officials in the Department of Basic Education at national, provincial, district and circuit levels; estimate the number of educators and school officials already receiving ARVs; assess the relationship between behavioural factors and HIV infection amongst public school learners, educators, school support staff and officials in SA; compare HIV prevalence, and risk behaviour amongst public school educators in SA over the period 2005 to 2011; assess the type and frequency of exposure to HIV prevention, treatment and care and support programmes and the impact of these programmes amongst learners, public educators and school officials in SA; assess the type and frequency of exposure to major national behaviour change communication (BCC) programmes and assess the relationship between these programmes and HIV prevention, AIDS treatment, care and support and knowledge of and attitude towards tuberculosis (TB).
