Abstract

The 2016 South African national human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence, incidence, behaviour and communication survey (which is also known as the 2016 South African HIV Behavioural, Sero-status and Media impact survey or SABSSM V for short), is the fifth in a series of population-based, cross-sectional surveys of households in South Africa designed to assess the prevalence of key human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related health indicators. This multi-stage cluster survey of 22,000 randomly selected households in South Africa will include approximately 60,000 participants. About 40,000 study participants will be sampled from 15,000 households identified in the national sampling frame as described in the previous surveys. Additional sampling of about 20,000 individuals from 7,000 households in 13 selected high HIV prevalence districts will be carried out to enable the generation of more precise district-level HIV prevalence estimates. SABSSM V will determine HIV incidence, prevalence, antiretroviral treatment exposure, viral load suppression, HIV drug resistance, risk behaviours and communication in a household-based, nationally-representative sample of the population of South Africa and will describe uptake of key HIV care and treatment services.
