Abstract

The purpose and main task of the NRF funded research project to support prepatory work for the main study. Activity under this grant will include developing study protocols, study materials, qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments and data management systems. These instruments will be used to assess the extent of transactional sex, examine its drivers, measure HIV incidence and ultimately in the design of a multi-level risk reduction intervention for use among adolescents and young women in Universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa, in a bigger national study for which the researchers in this project are seeking funding. The project will contribute towards the capacity development of African scholars by funding four Ph.D. students, at R80 000 each. These students will be based at the three collaborating institutions (2 - UWC, 1-HSRC and 1 - EBS). Some of these students will also be hired as research assistants to afford them hands on experience of developing research projects.
