Abstract

In the current study I intend to explicitly recruit mothers and fathers who do not necessarily have to form part of the same family. In order to understand how to successfully support affected parents to cope with the psychosocial stresses associated with adolescent substance abuse, we need to explore a) how parents in different societal (communities) and rehabilitation (accessing treatment or not) contexts experience and respond to adolescent substance abuse, and b) the gendered context of living- and coping with an adolescent substance abuser. Such empirical evidence is imperative for the development of contextually relevant and gender sensitive parental programmes that could alleviate the stresses that both mothers and fathers endure as a result of the adolescents behaviours.
