Non-conforming gender identities.

Abstract

This study set out to compare the experiences of self-identifying gender non-conforming youth (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexed, and queer) residing on the urban peripheries of Cape Town, South Africa, against the realities of gender non-conforming youth in more affluent, resourced communities of the same city. The comparison was drawn between the gender non-conforming youth of the Cape Flats, a term used to describe communities such as Bellville-South, Bridgetown, Delft, Elsies River, Grassy Park, Kuils River, and Mitchells Plain, among others, and the gender non-conforming youth in the more affluent Southern Suburbs.

Specifically, the aim of this study was to explore how various socio-economic stratifications, or class distinctions, within ten predominantly coloured communities across the Cape Flats and the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, impact on the expression of, and opportunities for, gender non-conforming youth.
