RESEARCH OUTPUTS: Understanding the nature & extent of substance abuse/use in Mpumalanga province: a technical research report

Abstract

The project seeks to understand the nature and extent of substance abuse/use in the province of Mpumalanga and subsequent effects to the individual, the family, and the community at large. Specifically, this study aims at providing information to the department of Social development in the province (DSD), policy makers, NGOs, service providers, and the general public on the extent and nature of substance abuse with the view of prompting appropriate action to combat the problem. In aiming to describe the nature and extent of substance abuse in Mpumalanga province; the study will: (a)Document trends in substance abuse and assess the current context; (use/abuse of substances, legislative framework, and intervention approaches) to assist the DSD refine its mandate and improve service delivery related to substance abuse interventions in Mpumalanga province; (b) Explore the levels awareness, accessibility, availability and use of various substances in the province; (c) Identify perceptions, attitude and behavior related to substance abuse from a variety of sectors within the province; (d) Identify the various interventions that can be put in place to deal with substance abuse and its health and other consequences in the province; and (e) Provide preliminary baseline indicators that will be tracked over time, as well as identifying new trends and patterns of substance abuse in the province.
