Abstract

The main aim of this study is to investigate, through a five-year longitudinal and qualitative study, the obstacles and opportunities students experience in Higher Education and Training institutions. Over five years, the objective is to follow a cohort of university entrants across multiple university sites with the intention to obtain a deep, contextualised understanding of these students subjective experiences and micro-social processes. The study will therefore focus on three specific research objectives: (1) an understanding of the structural and social factors students identify as aiding or hindering success; (2) the role of intersecting identities (race, class and gender) in students perceptions and experiences of success; and (3) their use of personal and social agency in creating opportunities and striving for success. The intention in this study is to provide knowledge that can be used in interventionist strategies by the Department of Higher Education and Training.
