Abstract

The main purpose of this exercise is to audit programmes for children in Child and Youth Care Centres (CYCCs) or shelters. The specific objectives are as follows: To gain understanding of the programmes currently rendered by CYCCs (shelters for street children) in four provinces of Free State, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Eastern Cape; and the children's behaviours they address; To determine if the current programmes meet the psycho-social, emotional and economic, and developmental needs of children living and working in the streets, To assess the levels of intervention primary prevention, early intervention, protection and integration at which services through programmes for street children are provided It is envisioned that the findings of the exercise will inform future decisions regarding programmes for children living and working in the streets, such as the review of the current programmes, and the development of new programmes to meet the children's holistic needs.
