Abstract

the major objective of the research is to produce a report that describes the awareness and understanding of national governments about the Population Policy, and progress that has been made since 1998 (when the baseline study was done) with policy implementation. The intended users of the research report will be political leaders and a wide range of policy makers and planners in different spheres of government. In particular, the Department of Social Development (through the Chief Directorate: Population and Development), has been mandated to oversee the implementation of the Population Policy in different spheres of government and sectors of society, will shape its strategic planning and focus according to the research findings. The information on the following key aspects will be covered: National Government Departments??? general awareness and understanding of the Population Policy for South Africa,specifically in terms of the impact of population trends and dynamics on sustainable human development: The impact that the Chief Directorate: Population and Development has had since 1998 in terms ofcreating awareness and understanding of population and development issues, and providing technical assistance to government departments to integrate population issues into development planning: Budgetary allocations that can be related to programmes and projects that underpin the population policy strategies: and Existing gaps that should be addressed to improve the implementation of the Population Policy, and the type of support required by government Departments to enhance their understanding and technical capacity to integrate population issues into development planning.
