Abstract

Among the direct and indirect factors influencing the persistence of poverty from childhood into adulthood are the consequences of poor childhood nutrition and its effect on physical and cognitive growth; poor adult health, including maternal health, and its effect on child health and child caring; hunger and its effect on educational attainment and behavior, access to services, especially clean water and sanitation, and its effects on physical health and nutritional status; and the home, school and social environment, and its effect on health, behavior and diet.
