Abstract

This study aims to examine transformations in social, economic and political circumstances and the impact of these changes on one urban community ??? the ???coloured??? community of Wentworth, which is located in the south of Durban, South Africa. As the apartheid system evolved, ???coloureds??? came to occupy a certain position within the racial hierarchy nationally, but which had a distinct characteristic in various parts of the country. This was to change dramatically when a democratic system was introduced in the mid-1990s. Social, economic and political transformation occurred at different times during both the apartheid and democratic eras. At each stage of transformation, individuals and different sectors of the community were affected in different ways, and the objective here is to study the impact of such transformations on the Wentworth community.
