Abstract

This research project's focus lies on youth languages, subcultures and identities.

The first phase of the research focuses on township youth in the Gauteng region and examines patterns of language use among male and female youth and how both verbal and non-verbal communication index subcultural identities.

In examining subcultural identities, it will investigate how these relate to local, national and global identities and future orientation of youth in South African townships. Connections to criminal subcultures, marginalisation of certain sections of South African youth and implications for South African society will also be explored.

Historical work on youth languages and subcultures will be compared to current findings looking at local and global influences that shape youth identities, perspectives and attitudes.
