Abstract

SaVI brings together scholars from various entities across the University of Cape Town (UCT), and works towards a safe South Africa, where freedom and security are the norm, rather than the exception. Its mission is to establish research collaboration that will contribute to promoting safety, reducing violence; and to raise awareness about these issues within South Africa. SaVI key role will be to develop theory on violence and safety and to translate this into practice. One of the mechanisms to achieve this is to make wider and more efficient use of existing resources. In this regard, SaVI was commissioned by the United Nations Children???s Fund (UNICEF) in January 2014 to provide research, data analysis, modelling and recommendations on issues related to violence against women and children in South Africa, and how to reduce and prevent such violence. This work will be undertaken to support the efforts of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to Investigate the Root Causes of Violence Against Women and Children.
