Abstract

The Gugulethu-Manenburg Longitudinal Youth Study is a 10-year longitudinal study, begun in 2016, following 920 12-18 year-old youth from Gugulethu & Manenburg, two extremely high-violence, resource-deprived communities on the Cape Flats of Cape Town, South Africa. All subjects live within an 800-meter radius of a new multi-agency youth development Safe Hub site (a facility offering a range of interventions and services, including sport-based life skills programming, academic tutoring, employment training and placement, computer access/training, and social work services). This multi-level intervention combining government agencies, service providers, and school and community structures is intended to be a ???game-changer??? in the advancement of pro-social development and the reduction of youth violence and anti-social behaviours in these two adjacent (and traditionally segregated) communities.
