MOU: Science journalism and comms: Moving a compendium of socio-behavioural research on COVID-19

Abstract

This Memorandum establishes a partnership between HSC and IC within the HSRC in collaborating on the project: Science journalism and comms: Moving a compendium of socio-behavioural research on COVID-19. In March 2020, the South African government set up a Multi-sectoral National Outbreak Response Team (MNORT) to inform the response of the country to COVID-19. The studies conducted by the HSRC were aimed at contributing evidence to the activities of several sub committees of the MNORT. The studies generated evidence on gaps in knowledge, incorrect practices and problems encountered in infection control among groups, individuals and institutions. They identified sources of fear, anger, panic, prejudice and vulnerability. The findings continue to be used to inform health policy and practice, including how the existing guidelines on prevention and control can be effectively applied in the South African context, such as in informal settlements, rural areas and health facilities. The aim of the proposed project will therefore be to consider strategies for translating this compendium of socio-behavioural research on COVID-19 in South Africa towards broader public dissemination. In summary, communication materials adapted to specific public and key stakeholder groups will be developed. Importantly, throughout the development of communication materials affected and vulnerable groups/communities will be included in the development of simplified messages. Moreover, throughout the development of communication materials affected and vulnerable groups/communities will be included as partners/collaborators.
