African Observatory on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AORAI)
Abstract
The project is being implemented together with
Research ICT Africa (RIA), a non-profit technology research organisation based in Cape Town, and is funded by the
Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
The HSRC was closely involved in the conceptualisation of AORAI in 2021 as a continuation of a range of work
contributing to an Africa-led approach to AI policy formulation, including the AI & Data Series and the capacity building
programme for policymakers on AI.
For AORAI, RIA was contracted by the IDRC to lead implementation of the wider project. RIA has enrolled the HSRC
as a partner to drive development of the AORAI Policy Map, Research Repository and oversee the Observatory web
platform design and launch. Since 2021, the HSRC has been working with RIA on the design of the policy mapping
approach and web platform layout.
