Abstract
The South Africa of 2011 is characterized by very high levels of poverty and inequality that are morally in-defensible and constitute a significant source of economic and social instability. In addition, they point to a failure of the country to fully capitalize on the promise offered by the dawning of democracy in 1994, and to an underutilization of capabilities and resources. A significant (though by no means the only) source of this poverty and inequality lies with the high, and persistent, levels of unemployment in the South African economy, which is reflected in the fact that currently one out of every three working age adults that want to be employed cannot find employment.-
