Abstract
This report presents a summary of themes derived from close reading of the entire SANPAD data set, as well as a preliminary coding of a portion of the data (about a third). The purpose of this report is to outline these themes for further refinement in order to create a final 'code list' upon which the remainder of the data will be coded. Some are broader, descriptive and may require some refinement, whereas others are more focused and analytical. The challenge as an outsider to the project is to ascertain the limits of imposing an analytical frame on the data when creating these themes. As can be seen below, I have named some 'discourses' and spoken of 'constructions', which implies a particular analytical frame (broadly social constructionist). I took the liberty of making this theoretical judgement as I am aware that Prof Macleod and the students working on this project work within a social constructionist paradigm. Some of my sense-making was also informed by familiarity with certain work in the field. The group would need to decide if this analytical framing is acceptable or if broader, more descriptive categories are desired.-
