Abstract

The HIV/AIDS pandemic has caused many to believe that the labour force might stagnate or shrink. This might be a realistic assumption in the context of very high rates of infection amongst young women in particular. However, this is an explanation potentially given by a demographer, not a labour market economist. There are many reasons why labour force participation rates might still grow in the future. This note review some of this reasoning.
