Abstract

South Africa is characterised by the co-existence of progressive legislation upholding the rights of lesbians and gay men, and discrimination and violent hate crimes perpetrated against them. By analysing attitudes to homosexual behaviour over the last five years, derived from the South African Social Attitudes Survey (SASAS), the authors provide evidence on the changing direction and intensity of sexual prejudice in the country.
