Abstract

As an economist and planner with considerable experience in urban and regional development, the author is interested in spatial issues and the geography of development, These issues are enormously important in South Africa. The chapter will examine four main themes, South Africa's dual economy and how inequality is reproduced because of geography, how this emerged historically, developments since the end of apartheid and what we should be doing to take this issue more seriously and promote spatial transformation.
