Abstract
The primary aim of the report is to assess the burden of lifestyle diseases on the health sector in the Gauteng Province. The objectives are: i) to estimate the prevalence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity among the general population in Gauteng, using existing national and provincial data sets and available literature, as well as by age, gender, race, education and socioeconomic status, ii) to estimate the prevalence of tobacco and alcohol and other drug (AOD) use in the Gauteng province at provincial level as well as by age, gender, race, education and socioeconomic status, and iii) to develop innovative and province specific recommendations to improve the existing measures aimed at preventing and reducing lifestyle diseases at various levels of impact. Recommendations are aligned with the National Department of Health's (NDoH) targets of reducing physical inactivity by 10%, alcohol consumption by 20% and obesity by 10% by 2020.-
