Abstract

This Project Report presents the findings of the Gender and Mobility Study of the Electoral Commission. This study was conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in response to a request by the Civic Education, Research and Knowledge Management (CERKM) unit of the Electoral Commission to investigate the reasons why women are reluctant to apply for advertised senior level positions. These concerns raised by the Commissioners of the Electoral Commission of South Africa are consistent with reports compiled by the Commission for Employment Equity (CEE), which found that both the public and private sectors seem to be struggling with ensuring that women are adequately represented at all levels of employment.
