Ms Busisiwe Magazi
Ms Busi Magazi is a researcher in the Child, Youth and Family Development programme. She holds an MPhil in social anthropology at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Before joining the HSRC, she worked on the renowned Financial Diaries project that documented how individuals living in resource-poor communities manage and spend their money (SALDRU- UCT). She also worked at the AIDS and Society Research Unit (CSSR- UCT) profiling communities' access to, and experiences of, health care centres in Khayelitsha by a group of people on HAART; conducting research among traditional healers and their impact on HIV/AIDS treatment; and worked as a qualitative researcher in a trial study to reduce TB and HIV in communities around Cape Town (Desmond Tutu TB Centre- University of Stellenbosch).
Her dissertation considered how tuberculosis is managed in the context of HIV/AIDS, food insecurity and social inequalities in a peri-urban area in South Africa.
Her areas of research interest include: social, economic and cultural aspects, with emphasis on livelihoods, gender, disclosure and intergenerational relations, policy implications on prevention, treatment and care of TB and HIV/AIDS, African men and morality.
Ms Magazi is the co-author of a recent RENEWAL research report entitled, The converging impact of Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and food insecurity on poor households in Zambia and South Africa, and co-authored a CSSR working paper entitled From rhetoric to reality: An appraisal of South Africa's 2007-2011 HIV/AIDS National Strategic Plan.
