Professor Thenjiwe Meyiwa is a research director in Education and Skills Development programme. She holds a PhD in Feminist Oral Studies at the University of Natal and an MCom (Organisation and Systems Management) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal UKZN).

Before joining the HSRC in January 2012 she was a research professor at Walter Sisulu University (Mthatha, Eastern Cape). She has also worked as a director for the UKZN's Gender Studies Programme where she was an honorary professor. She is an NRF-rated social science researcher.

Her areas of research interest include: cultural constructions of gender, contemporary human behavioural patterns, and the impact of HIV/AIDS on parenting, women and home care givers. She has more than 15 years of experience of gender training, research development and policy analysis. She has worked in South Africa and internationally with organisations and research teams ranging from government organisations, universities and human rights NGOs.

Prof. Meyiwa has presented more than 20 conference papers and published her articles and book chapters in national and international journals and books. Her most recent work, published in Social Dynamics, investigated shifting parental practices within African families due to HIV/AIDS. She has co-edited two books and one is forthcoming (HSRC Press).
