Ms Zibuyile Adelaide Nene

Ms Zibuyile Nene is a Masters Research Trainee in the City Region (Spatial) Economies Working Group of the Inclusive Economic Development (IED) Research Division at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Zibuyile assumed this position in 2019. Her research centres around young people?s self?agency to navigate social, political and economic blocks; whether it?s accessing higher education institutions, employment, business opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods etc.

Prior to joining the HSRC, Zibuyile worked as Programmes Coordinator for Community Law and Rural Development Centre, an NGO based in Durban where she was responsible for coordinating community based development projects in various parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal. She has worked with organisations such as Cwaninga Economics and Development Research Consultants, the Association for Rural Advancement and the Newcastle Municipality where she was responsible for contributing to poverty alleviation projects under the Development Planning Directorate. Ms Nene has also worked on the Cash plus Care project, an impact evaluation of an incentivised behaviour change intervention for young women, aged 19-24 years in King Cetshwayo District, KwaZulu-Natal. On this project her duties included tool development, qualitative data collection (conducting in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and photo voice), and verbatim transcription, translation, coding on qualitative software (Atlas.ti) and reporting.

Ms Nene worked with the Association for Rural Advancement on a project investigating sustainable livelihoods for rural communities in the Amajuba district. In addition she has also worked with the Cwaninga Economics and Development Research consultants where she conducted feasibility studies for different projects, strategy and literature review, Case Study Research (CSR), Ethnographic Research (ER) and Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA). Zibuyile holds an undergraduate degree in Education and Development studies from the University of KwaZulu Natal (Pietermaritzburg campus). She is currently studying towards her Master of Development Studies with the School of Built Environment and Development Studies at the University of KwaZulu Natal (Howard College campus). She presented on Young women?s perceptions and experiences of sexual and reproductive health services in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa at the 2019 International AIDSImpact conference.
